Kikaku // Dusseldorf

We discovered Kikaku, one of the best Japanese restaurant in Dusseldorf, out of pure luck. We didn’t know that Dusseldorf is one of the cities with highest Japanese population in the world. We liked it so much, we went there almost every week during our stay.

Just by glancing at the clientele, you can tell that most people here are repeat customers. Most of them just take quick look at the menu that they have seen many times, chatting with their friends without paying much attention to decor or the service. What better way to tell that this is great restaurant!

Nothing fancy in terms of decor, light wood tables and walls. As this is Germany, hygiene standards are reasonably high, though.

Towards the end of the evening, some tables starting to get free. This is not the case during the rush hour. It’s is normal to expect 20-30 minutes of wait at the entrance.

Starting with a bento box. Salmon sashimis (our first reference) was pretty good. Salmon was fatty and tasty without any distinguishable smell or fragrance. Egg based starters were good but we’re not fond of them as much as Japanese folks are.

Our chef is preparing our maki and nigiri plates. The way service was made is very similar to what you would expect in JApan or in high-end Japanese restaurants in New York.
